The keys to success in establishing grass seed are easy if you know what to do. Unfortunately, many people fail to care for the grass seed properly, which results in them wasting their time, money and energy.

Step 1: Cover the Grass Seed
After you have spread the grass seed, you need to cover it with ¼ to 1/8 of an inch of peat moss. It is advisable to use a peat spreader to create an even coat of the moss over the ground.
Step 2: Water the Grass Seed
Once the peat moss is in place, you need to water your lawn thoroughly. The first watering needs to soak the top six inches of soil (at least). In order to do this, you may have to water the area lightly several times and allow a break between each watering so it can soak into the soil. Make sure you don’t allow puddles to form.
Step 3: Water Regularly for 3 Weeks
You need to water your lawn at least two times a day for the initial three weeks after the grass seed is spread. The best time to do this is during the early morning, or late afternoon. You should not water during the hottest part of the day, since the sun is just going to evaporate the water. During this period of time, you need to keep the lawn moist, but avoid making it soggy.
Step 4: Reduce Watering Frequency
Once you notice the grass has begun to grow, you can reduce the frequency you water your lawn. After it is completely grown, the lawn will only need to be watered (on average) once a week.
Step 5: Fertilize the New Grass
You should apply fertilizer to the grass approximately six weeks after germination. Make sure to follow the instructions on the fertilizer you choose, since it will vary from brand to brand.
Step 6: Wait for the Grass to Grow before Mowing
You need to allow the grass to reach a height of four inches before you mow it for the first time. While you are mowing it, only cut the grass from four inches to three. Also, make sure the blade you are using on your lawn mower is sharp and that your lawn is dry.
Step 7: Remove Weeds
You will need to remove the weeds from the grass by hand until you have mowed it two times. At this point, it will be safe to use a herbicide if necessary.
